Flight: Patrol. Took off 0730; evaded enemy aircraft at 0915 and 1100; found fleet at 1200 and tracked for four hours. Attacked by Japanese Zeros, wounding Gillis and shooting away rudder cable. Returning to base with no rudder, ran out of fuel over Unimak Pass. Made a dead-stick landing. Spotted by another PBY; rescued by Coast Guard at 2140. Unable to tow the bullet-riddled PBY, they sank it at 2340 with .50 caliber machine guns.
