Flight: Scouting - 10.3 hours. "Aerial combat with Jap. Mitsubishi Bomber. 40 Min Duration."

Patrolled within sector 200d to 020d, 700 miles out from Midway.

At 0950, a Betty approached fast from the starboard quarter. As it passed, Wideberg opened fire with the twin .30 bow gun. PPC Roby took evasive action for the next 30 minutes, mindful of the combat plane's 20mm cannon. The PBY fired approximately 700 rounds of .30- and .50-caliber ammunition, and was hit by approximately 175 bullets before returning to Midway on one engine. No injuries.
